Chesterfield is located in central New Jersey in Burlington County. It is approximately 22 square miles with a population of close to 7,700 residents.
Chesterfield Township was formed on November 6, 1688 and incorporated on February 21, 1798.
Chesterfield Township operates under the Township form of government which is comprised of three committeepersons who are elected on a partisan basis for an overlapping three year term, one member being elected each year. The committee traditionally selects the committeeperson serving the last year of his/her term to serve as mayor. The Mayor is always appointed in January after the elections. The Township Committee derives from the state statutes which delegates powers, prescribe the offices and structure and establish various procedures under which the Township must operate. The committee serves both legislative and executive functions.
The Committee appoints the Planning Board and Environmental Commission members. They appoint/hire professionals who advised them on various specific matters and give guidance in the form of recommendations or decisions of a quasi-judicial nature. The Committee meets on the second Wednesday and fourth Thursday (optional) of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
All Citizens are invited and encouraged to attend all scheduled meetings. A public comment period is included at each committee meeting. A citizen may, however, speak on any given item on the agenda by identifying himself/herself by name. If there is a particular matter on which you would like to speak, please call the Municipal Clerk to be formally placed on the agenda.
The official newspaper for advertising all Township action is designated annually. The Burlington County Times and Trenton Times currently serves as the Township’s official newspaper.
